Staffing Industry Analysts conducted its first Staffing Firms to Work For survey in 2009. At the time, the economy was poised to ramp up following the Great Recession, and it was all about getting the right people in the right jobs. In fact, a recent survey at the time by the Forum for People Performance Management and Measurement indicated that companies that establish a people-centric culture would be well-positioned for a strong recovery from the recession.
Going back a few years, Alex Edmans, a professor at Wharton Business school had analyzed the stock market performance of companies selected by Fortune magazine as the “Best Companies to Work For in America” from 1998-2005. According to Edman’s findings, that portfolio of stocks earned average annual returns of 14% by the end of 2005 — that’s double the average market return.
Given the importance of customer and candidate service to success in the staffing industry, it’s was our belief that those companies who have engaged and motivated internal staff are also likely to find success over the long term in the marketplace. Thus, the Best Staffing Firms to Work For was born.
Staffing Industry Review covered the first group of winners — then a top-10 ranking — late that year. Our second list, published in the April 2011 issue, recognized 15 US firms split up into small, midsize and large categories.
In 2012, we added Best Staffing Firms to Temp/Contract For to the mix, and in 2014, the year we launched this website, we expanded the survey to recognize staffing firms in the United Kingdom. Ireland was added in 2020, though the competition did not take place in the UK and Ireland in 2021.
