Impacting Lives for the Better

Fostering and rewarding positive employee experiences

Founded in 2019 by Byron Kirtron and headquartered in Sandy, Utah, healthcare staffing firm Staffers LLC continues to expand throughout the United States. True to its motto — “Come to the Rescue” — Staffers places travel nurses, currently 290 strong, where they’re needed most. There is a lot to be excited about as the firm continues its growth trajectory.

When asking any of Staffers’ 18 internal employees why they chose to work for the company, the answers echo a familiar sentiment: Creating great experiences for their staff is a top priority. Staffers takes pride in caring for their staff. The exceptional work Staffers puts into its team is what drives the company’s mission creating outstanding experiences for their employees every day, earning the company its reputation as a Best Staffing Firm to Work For.

A Culture-Centric Approach

The foundation of any successful organization is its culture, and Staffers takes this statement seriously. “When I started Staffers, I used the concepts of partnership, sales and communication from day one to create a culture that values each employee, strives to know each person individually, and provides flexibility around work and personal life,” shares Kirtron, who serves as the firm’s president and CEO. Kirtron’s background in HR provided an eye-opening understanding of how success is contingent upon the ability to create a culture that fosters and rewards positive experiences. To that end, Staffers is dedicated to finding and retaining great talent, as it is the only way a company can succeed long term. “Without our staff, we don’t have a company,” Kirtron explains, “and our ability to compete in the market hinges chiefly on the talent we have in house and their feelings of loyalty to the company.”

The core values Staffers strives for include sincerity, flexibility and trustworthiness, which are key in how they operate. The goal is simple: for people to love where they work and what they do. VP of Operations Ada Mayhew wholeheartedly feels this is a tried-and-true methodology. “My goal as a leader 10 years ago and today is the same,” she says. “I want all my employees to love their jobs and to want to come to work.” Her passion for the healthcare industry stemmed from her experience working as a state-tested nursing assistant in an Alzheimer’s unit, which eventually led her to her 13-year tenure in HR leadership. In 2019, Kirtron recruited Mayhew to join Staffers as his operations VP with one catch: She would need to relocate to Utah from Ohio. And Mayhew has never regretted taking this leap of faith. “I didn’t realize how much work a new startup would be, but I’m blessed to have been part of it all,” she says. “I couldn’t be prouder of our team and the differences they continue to make every day.”

In order to maintain Staffers’ employee-centric culture, Kirtron himself personally interviews external field staff hires to make sure they’re a perfect fit and to demonstrate the company’s open-door approach to internal communication. “It still surprises our candidates today when the president of the company is the one to log into [their] Zoom interview,” Mayhew chuckles, “but I truly believe this sets us apart and as a result allows us to hire the best of the best!” For Financial Controller Annette Hays, who joined the team a year ago, meeting Kirtron during her initial interview was a major factor in her decision to come aboard. “He is kind, honest and inspiring, and I could see an opportunity to be part of an amazing, growing company with a lot of potential.”

Impacting Lives

Engagement and involvement with staff internally and externally have been a building block to creating a successful healthcare staffing organization. But Staffers takes it a step further with their simple yet meaningful mission, which truly became their purpose when the pandemic impacted the world: Come to the rescue. Amid Covid, Mayhew explains, “We came to the rescue for thousands of residents, hundreds of healthcare workers, dozens of healthcare facilities, and impacted the lives of thousands.”

Staffers has come to the rescue for their internal staff over the last year as well. Kirtron recounts how colleagues stepped up for team members who experienced a sudden tragedy. “They have dropped everything and rushed to the side of cherished members of the team to sit with them, make meals for them and provide reassurance until additional support could arrive,” Kirtron recalls. “And then they continued to follow up in the coming weeks and months to make sure this person was still OK.” Such acts of compassion and camaraderie within the organization comprise Kirtron’s proudest moments as a leader and make Staffers a place that impacts lives for the better.

Today and Tomorrow

In addition to Staffers’ dedication to the well-being of its team members, the company also celebrates their accomplishments with an array of recognition programs, including quarterly and annual “Employee of the Month” incentives. Staffers rewards their annual winners by bringing them and their families to one of their healthcare conferences, all expenses paid. The organization takes pride in recognizing their employees’ accolades in front of their peers and acknowledging their hard work.

Looking ahead, Staffers plans to institute pulse surveys to positively build off employee feedback and understand more about their employees. They are also looking to enact a 401(k) matching in the future to help employees with their financial goals and futures. Lastly, Staffers is excited to include more team-building programs in the form of retreats in the year to come.

With such a solid foundation, the future is bright for Staffers. As Mayhew puts it, “Receiving this award as a Best Staffing Firm to Work For validates to me that our culture is strong, our employees are happy and we are doing the right things for the right reasons.”
